Why Every Website Needs an SSL Certificate (And What Happens Without One)

What an SSL certificate actually does

What browsers and Google do when you do not have SSL

Google Chrome, Safari, Firefox and Edge all display a prominent "Not Secure" warning for non-HTTPS websites. Research consistently shows that 85% of users will abandon a website after seeing this warning — the moment of abandonment typically happens before they even read a single line of your content.

Google has confirmed that HTTPS is a ranking signal — meaning websites with SSL rank higher in search results than equivalent non-HTTPS sites, all else being equal. In competitive markets, this alone is enough reason to prioritize SSL.

Types of SSL certificates

Domain Validation (DV) certificates are the most common and easiest to obtain — they verify only that you control the domain. Suitable for blogs, portfolios, and informational sites. Organization Validation (OV) certificates verify your organization's identity in addition to domain ownership, offering higher trust indicators. Extended Validation (EV) certificates require the most rigorous verification and display the organization name in the browser bar. Recommended for financial institutions and e-commerce stores processing sensitive transactions.

Free vs. paid certificates

Free certificates from Let's Encrypt are excellent for most websites — they provide the same encryption strength as paid certificates and are trusted by all major browsers. Paid certificates from commercial CAs offer OV and EV validation, a warranty in case of a certificate misdissuance, and often come with additional security features like malware scanning. For e-commerce or any site handling payments and personal data, a paid OV or EV certificate is the professional choice.

How long does it take to install?

For a new domain, a DV certificate can be issued and installed in minutes. For OV certificates, expect one to three business days for identity verification. Installation on your server typically takes less than 30 minutes by a qualified technician.
